PS3 price cuts will not follow PS2 pattern
Sony Computer Entertainment America's Jack Tretton has said that the PlayStation 3 will not see a price cut as soon as the PS2.
The head of Sony Computer Entertainment - Jack Tretton -said that the price of the PlayStation 3 game console will not be reduced significantly within one and a half year after the launch. The information may end-users who were looking forward to get a more or less affordable PlayStation 3 game console.
But reluctance to announce a price reduction is not a surprise, as Sony sells its PS3 machine as a loss now: the premium PlayStation 3 already costs Sony around £400 to build. The surprise is, nevertheless, that the company has no short-term plans for the more affordable PS3s.
Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari company, said in an interview that Sony's PlayStation 3 would not become a massive success due to price of the console itself as well as issues with game development for the PlayStation 3 gaming machine.
The console is due to hit shops in Britain and the rest of Europe on March 23. The 60GB console will cost £425 in Britain. One million PS3s will be made available during the initial launch period, together with more than 30 game titles, including the eagerly awaited Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm.
Despite this, in the UK demand is expected to high and unless you have pre-ordered don't expect to pick one up easily.
My advice? Well the Xbox 360 is looking to delivering great value when you compare it to the PS3 - and you can pick them up for around £200. Perhaps SONY will walk up and look at the pricing in the future...
