BBC iPlayer to launch on 27 July

27th July 2007. Remember this date. Internet TV is about to grow up. The BBC's on demand service, called iPlayer.

So what will the BBC iPLAYER allow viewers to do:

  • iPlayer will allow viewers to catch up on TV programmes for seven days
  • Some TV series can be downloaded and stored for 30 days
  • Viewers will be able to watch shows streamed live over the internet
  • Users will not be able to download programmes from other broadcasters
  • Classical recordings and book-readings are excluded from iPlayer

You might be surprised at my enthusiasm for this service. Why? well other providers have certainly got services up and running, but the BBC offering is going to blow them away - assuming it can handle tthe demand - for one single reason : content.

Shopping for a unique coffee table?

If you have around £5 grand to spend perhaps you could consider the new 'Microsoft Surface' product.
Ok, it is early days for you and I to consider owning, but this type of computer interaction is very exciting.

Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that’s easy for individuals or small groups to interact with in a way that feels familiar, just like in the real world. Surface can simultaneously recognize dozens and dozens of movements such as touch, gestures and will be able to recognize actual unique objects.

Will this mean you have to wash your hands with a anti-virus hand cream before using the table? Who knows...

Orange debuts wind-powered mobile charger for Festival

Orange has shown off a wind-powered charger that sits on top of your tent, converting gusts into juice for your mobile.
Working with Professor Shashank Priya at the University of Texas, Orange commissioned the research into a wind-powered portable phone charger that would take into account the unpredictable English climate to ensure a constant energy source.
Mobiles have become an integral part of kit for the modern music fan, but although this mini-turbine won't be on sale for a while, Glasto-goers will be able to take a gander at demo units at the Glastonbury festival.

And i thought that all you needed for a festival was a flower in your hair and a cheap bottle of cider...

Web-savvy Shopping Population set to Grow

Yet another study stating that online shopping is growing. Amazingly, the study by PricewaterhouseCoopers claims by 2011 virtually everyone under the age of 55 will have used the internet to buy goods and 70% of the UK shopping population will regularly be buying goods online compared to just over 50% of consumers today.

Mark Parry, partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, commented:“Our research shows that there is no longer such thing as a typical online consumer: five years ago the net shopper was relatively wealthy, young and male but today's online consumers are far more reflective of the general shopping population. The reality of online retail is finally catching up with the early hype, with online sales for 2007 predicted to grow by almost 30% on last year's high. All indications point to double digit growth in the years ahead. The UK retail sector is an industry in transformation.”

Online retailers will be delighted to hear this - ensuring that competition for your hard earned cash will be a strong as ever. Don't worry our price comparison site will be here to help you find the best deals!
