Cape Dreams Wines Cape Dreams Pinotage 2022 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75

At the 1991 International Wine and Spirits Competition in London, an unusual South African wine made from a little-known grape variety was awarded the title of "Best Red Wine." It was the first official recognition for the first of the region's native grape varieties, Pinotage, which came about through the experiments of one Abraham Izak Perold, the first professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, who decided to use Pinot Noir and Cinsaut to crossbreed and create a new variety suited to South Africa's climate. The basic idea was to help Pinot Noir, which, despite its undoubted quality and reasonable versatility, was struggling to yield interesting results in South Africa. Cape Dream offers it here in a particularly pleasant version, aged for about 9 months in large French oak barrels. The result is a wine characterized by a beautiful deep red color. The nose is intense and fruity, with fresh and sincere notes of red fruits and spices that blend perfectly with a pleasant woody memory. A wine that is already good today but can safely sit in the cellar some time waiting for the right opportunity. In fact, over time, it will certainly acquire more complexity.

Freshness and aromaticity in a perfect mix. For this third category, this is the right wine. Because Chenin Blanc, a grape variety native to the Loire Valley in France but also perfectly acclimated to the fertile vineyards of South Africa, has all these virtues. Endowed with a distinct natural acidity, when vinified with care as in this case, using only thermo-conditioned steel containers, it reveals pleasant hints reminiscent of pineapple and fruit salad, with distinct notes of citrus, dried apples and even musk. All in a well-balanced combination, with a long and pleasant finish. Excellent as an aperitif, it is the perfect wine for pairing with a pleasantly spicy dish. Try with Chinese and Japanese cuisine.

Asked by a customer in 2018 to create the ultimate glass for Cabernet Sauvignon, the following 12 months consisted of many tastings and changes to glass shape, size and rim diameter until Riedel Winewings literally took flight. Flat-bottomed and reminiscent of an aircraft wing, complete with winglets, Riedel Winewings is described by Georg as “brutally functional, taking the wine’s aromas and flavours on a flight.” Describing the reasoning behind this brutally functional design, Georg says “I chose a flat and stretched bottom with a wing-like shape as it increases the surface area of the wine exposed to oxygen. This leads to greater levels of evaporation and enables a greater intensity of aroma. When positioning one’s head to the glass, the nose is closer to the exposed and wider surface of the wine. This alone would not fully deliver the optimal aroma of each grape variety so, to capture the delicate layered aromas, it was necessary to curve the glass walls and to correctly calibrate the opening of each glass with its rim diameter.”
