Flat-bottomed and reminiscent of an aircraft wing, complete with winglets, Riedel Winewings is described by Georg as “brutally functional, taking the wine’s aromas and flavours on a flight.” Describing the reasoning behind this brutally functional design, Georg says “I chose a flat and stretched bottom with a wing-like shape as it increases the surface area of the wine exposed to oxygen. This leads to greater levels of evaporation and enables a greater intensity of aroma. When positioning one’s head to the glass, the nose is closer to the exposed and wider surface of the wine. This alone would not fully deliver the optimal aroma of each grape variety so, to capture the delicate layered aromas, it was necessary to curve the glass walls and to correctly calibrate the opening of each glass with its rim diameter.”

Designed by the Denby team, then mouth blown and handmade at well renowned glass factories, the vibrant accents of colour on the glass are created by rolling clear glass in coloured chips which fuse together when melted. The resulting colour is permanent and, as it doesn't contain lead, makes these White Wine Glasses dishwasher safe (although we would recommend hand washing to maintain the lustre of the glass). Outside Europe, and particularly in Australia and South Africa, as in this case, it is instead called Shiraz. The grape variety, let's be clear, is the same. But the resulting wine is decidedly different. Finer in the Old World, particularly where grapes grow in a cooler climate. More powerful and structured when Shiraz is grown on more fertile soils with more sun and heat. And this Cape Dream is no exception. Matured in large oak barrels for about 9 months, this Shiraz is particularly elegant and intense, with typical smoky aromas. A good wine already, but capable of aging well in the cellar, gaining more aromatic complexity as the months go by. To be uncorked without hesitation when the evening involves savory meat dishes. Excellent with roasts.

At the 1991 International Wine and Spirits Competition in London, an unusual South African wine made from a little-known grape variety was awarded the title of "Best Red Wine." It was the first official recognition for the first of the region's native grape varieties, Pinotage, which came about through the experiments of one Abraham Izak Perold, the first professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, who decided to use Pinot Noir and Cinsaut to crossbreed and create a new variety suited to South Africa's climate. The basic idea was to help Pinot Noir, which, despite its undoubted quality and reasonable versatility, was struggling to yield interesting results in South Africa. Cape Dream offers it here in a particularly pleasant version, aged for about 9 months in large French oak barrels. The result is a wine characterized by a beautiful deep red color. The nose is intense and fruity, with fresh and sincere notes of red fruits and spices that blend perfectly with a pleasant woody memory. A wine that is already good today but can safely sit in the cellar some time waiting for the right opportunity. In fact, over time, it will certainly acquire more complexity.

San Joaquin Valley, Central California, is the native land for the Chardonnay grapes used to process this interesting wine by Crane Lake. Harvest of grapes at full maturity and vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel. All with full respect for the starting fruit and its most typical varietal notes. Thus was born a very enjoyable and richly fruity white. In the glass, it has a beautiful light straw yellow color. The nose is highlighted by its rich bouquet of scents, with notes of pear, sweet melon, vanilla and fresh butter. In the mouth, however, it is rich and rewarding. Ripe fruit and citrus notes return in the finish. Decidedly balanced in all its components, this Chardonnay leaves a pleasant memory in the mouth for a long time. To do it justice, it should be paired with simple fish dishes. But it is also suitable as an aperitif.

It is here, where the sun beats down hard for several months each year, that most of California's farms are located. The Cabernet Sauvignon produced by Crane Lake ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and is only placed in wood for a few months before bottling. Intense ruby red, the nose is pleasantly fruity and characterized by flavors of blackberry, cherry and raspberry. Only at a later stage are slight vanilla undertones noticeable, resulting from the brief passage in the barrel. In the mouth it has good body and soft tannins. If an all-meat menu is planned, this is the bottle to have on hand.
